Below are some of the possible problems that can arise after having a Lasik procedure. The purpose of this article is not to turn you off Lasik procedures completely but to give you all the information that you need to make an informed choice.
Here are some problems that you could face:
1. The flap never heals. There are quite a number of claims that the flap created during the procedure weakens the cornea forever. The FDA even gives warning to athletes and other individuals prone to shock not to get Lasik.
2. Loss of contrast sensitivity. This complication results in a difficulty seeing at night. The quality of vision is reported to decrease years after the Lasik surgery has been done. Although some of these vision deterioration problems can be associated with aging.
3. Development of dry eyes. Another possible Lasik complication reported is the development of dry eyes. This may be caused by the severed corneal nerves that are responsible for triggering tear production.
4. Lasik-triggered astigmatism. This may be caused by the destruction of corneal stroma. The occurrence of this Lasik risks are even higher with an inexperienced Lasik surgeon doing the procedure.
5. Lasik can impede future eye disease diagnosis and treatment. For instance, precise intraocular pressure measurement to diagnose glaucoma is difficult if the patient underwent Lasik in the past. Lasik can also impede in the treatment of cataract.
Though there is various literature that claims the validity of Lasik complications, there are an equal amount of happy people who can validate the benefits of Lasik. If you’re keen on having the procedure done, the first thing you can do to minimize the Lasik risks is to find an experienced surgeon to do the procedure, and ask him or her about all the pros and cons of Lasik surgery. It’s your right to make an informed decision.
